Small Kids Room – When a child’s bedroom space is small, outfitting the room efficiently is the key to a space that is actually habitable.
Large furniture or toys that loom like behemoths in the space leave little room for anything else. Providing ample storage while removing most unnecessary items and clutter will give the room a sense of order and relaxation that a bedroom space should have.

Kids Room Furniture
For a Small Kids Room, a queen- or king-sized bed would completely overwhelm the space, leaving little room for anything else. A twin-sized loft bed provides space underneath for a desk, suitable for a quiet time doing homework or playing on a computer. A narrow platform storage bed provides drawer space for a child who doesn’t want to climb to crawl into bed each night. Other furniture in the room should be minimal, such as a desk or a chair and small table for reading or playing video games.
Kids Bedroom Storage
Furniture that also serves as storage does double duty in a small kids room. A storage bench or ottoman provides seating or a footrest while stashing away video game controllers, magazines or an extra blanket. Short bookcases lining the walls provide space for storybooks, puzzles and a few prized toys on display; the top of the bookcase holds a lamp, a plant or a collection of the child’s favorite things. Storage cubes that fit on the shelves provide extra storage space for toys and small items that lack a space of their own.
Toys
Toys have a way of collecting within a child’s room, often causing a mess if the child is not asked to pick things up every day. Oversized toys such as a rideable vehicle or playhouse large enough for the child to play within may need to be relegated to another area of the house, garage or outdoors. Instill a rule that every toy in the room has a place it belongs after playtime, such as a game closet, toy box or storage bin. Each toy must go back where it belongs when not in use — if a game came from a hallway game closet, for instance, it goes back after the game is over.
Decluttering
Personal belongings also cause clutter if not kept neatly stashed away, especially in a small kids room. A clothes hamper with attached basketball hoop makes a game out of picking dirty clothes off the floor and placing them where they belong. School books and supplies belong on a desk or in a drawer and are returned there after use each day. Remove random items that add to the sense of clutter in the room and seem to have no place they belong, or give the child a task of finding a place to tuck each item neatly away if it’s not meant for display. Neatness is the key.
